Colorectal cancer screening in the Czech Republic
The epidemiology of colorectal cancer (CRC) in the Czech Republic is extremely unfavorable. An incidence of 79/100,000, and mortality rate of 45/100,000, are alarming figures, which have not changed in recent years, and are the consequence of an unfavorable genetic burden, unfavorable environmental factors and dietary habits of the population of the Czech Republic. - The Czech Society of Gastroenterology initiated the CRC screening in 2000, the FOBT was established as a standard for a preventive two-year examination performed by GPs. Three screening rounds in 2001, 2002 and 2005 including 535.248 persons revealed 6,4 % positive FOBTs, 0,33 % carcinoma and 1,9 % adenoma. The number of FOBTs and detection rates have doubled between 2001 and 2005. By introducing its screening program, Czech gastroenterology has made a major achievement in preventive medicine.
