Colorectal Screening in Germany
In October 2002 the German screening program was updated to incorporate CRC-screening using colonoscopy. The new program includes annual gFOBT starting at age 50, screening colonoscopy for all people above age 55 and FOBT biennually for those who are unwilling to undergo colonoscopy. The costs for screening are covered by the public health insurance companies which cover more than 90% of the population. In summary, the results are promising: in the first three years 10.2% of all eligible women and 8.8% of all eligible men underwent a screening colonoscopy. The results are corresponding to international studies: around 70 % of detected carcinoma were in stage I and II and therefore curable.
